Executive Summary
The Extended Reality (XR) industry is rapidly differentiating into specialized
domains such as spatial computing and generative AI convergence. A single
product launch or corporate announcement now frequently reshapes the
structure of related technology content within a short period. Conventional
instruments such as industry surveys, patent analysis, and bibliometric studies
capture these shifts only after the fact, given their annual cycles and filing or
publication lags. YouTube's leading technology channels, where the interests of
global experts and early adopters surface relatively early, offer a complementary
data source for observing such shifts through upload frequency and viewer
engagement.
This study applied quantitative content analysis to 5,711 videos published
between 2021 and 2025 by 20 leading YouTube technology channels, classifying
them into nine technology categories. Content production was concentrated in
two categories, device and platform (68.9% on a five-year average) and
interaction and UX (13.3%), together accounting for 82.3%; this device-centered
structure persisted across the five years. At the category level, production share
and viewer engagement moved in the same direction (Spearman rho = +0.68, p
= 0.042). Within categories, however, views were heavily concentrated in a small
number of videos, so the median rather than the mean was used as the
measure of engagement.
AI diffusion took the form of combination with existing content rather than
growth as a separate field. The production share of the AI-XR convergence
category itself rose only from 0.06% in 2021 to 1.2% in 2025, whereas the
share of videos explicitly mentioning AI-related terms rose from 2.6% to 18.3%
over the same period, an approximately sevenfold increase. This is a change that
category-level statistics alone do not capture. The diffusion also proceeded with
a lag across channel types: developer-ecosystem channels rose steadily from
11.5% in 2021 to 44.0% in 2025, while specialist media began to rise markedly
only in 2024.
This analysis is an exploratory attempt confined to observation within the
ecosystem of leading content channels, and its results can be used as one
reference signal for examining global trends in XR technology content. In
particular, the earlier rise of AI-related discussion in developer-ecosystem
channels suggests an early observation point for emerging technology agendas.
When such signals are cross-validated against existing sources such as periodic
industry surveys and industrial statistics, they can contribute to a multi-layered
understanding of how global XR technology content is changing.
